Short answers first, official sources underneath, and the date every answer was checked. Updated 27 September 2026 ## What is Asia Travel Forum? **Short answer:** an edited reference site that answers the practical questions travelers ask about Asia, with the most depth on Thailand. It is not a discussion forum: there are no user accounts, posts, replies, votes or member profiles, and every answer is written by our editors. The name is historical. Instead of threads, each page is organised as questions, and each question opens with a short answer you can use on its own: a number, a rule, a place or a time. The detail, the tables and the sources follow. The main pages are the [Thailand travel Q&A](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/thailand), the [airport transfer answers](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/thailand/airport-transfers), the [drive-time table from Bangkok](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/thailand/road-trips-from-bangkok), the [basics for ten Asian destinations](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/destinations) and the [eSIM guide](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/guides/esim-for-asia). ## How are the answers researched and checked? **Short answer:** every rule, fee, number and date comes from an official or first-hand source, which is listed at the end of the page with the date we checked it. If we cannot source a fact, it is left out. - **Official first:** government and agency pages (immigration, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Revenue Department, the Bank of Thailand, Airports of Thailand, embassies, the US CDC) come before news reports. When only a news report exists, we cite it as such. - **Conflicts are stated, not hidden:** where official pages disagree, as they do on the proof-of-funds amount for Thai visa-exempt visitors, we say so and give the safe figure. - **Figures carry their origin:** drive times are marked as operator-published or as road-routing estimates without traffic, and estimates are written with "about". - **Dated:** every page shows when it was last checked, and answers say "as of" where a rule is new or changing. - **Rechecked:** a page is reviewed when a rule it covers changes (Thailand's visa-free stay, for example, fell from 60 to 30 days on 15 September 2026) and at least every six months otherwise. What we do not do: we do not inspect vehicles, hotels or businesses, we do not certify anyone, and we do not publish taxi fares, which change and are shown on the operators' own pages. ## Which services mentioned on this site are affiliated with it? **Short answer:** the eSIM stores (the ten country stores and their parent store, eSIM Hub) and the Smile Taxi Service network of transfer sites in Thailand. Every page that recommends or lists them carries a disclosure. Everything we say about these services comes from their published terms: for the transfer sites, for example, a fixed price per vehicle with tolls included, nothing charged when you book and payment to the driver at the end. We link to them because they answer the "how do I get there" and "how do I get online" questions directly, alongside the public options (meter taxis, trains, buses and flights), which we describe from official sources. Government websites and third-party tools such as maps, booking platforms and currency converters are independent of us; commercial third-party links are marked nofollow. ## Are the photos real? No. The images on this site are AI-generated illustrations of typical scenes, such as a beach, a temple or an airport hall. They do not show specific businesses, vehicles or people, and they are not evidence of how a place looks today. ## Can I send a question or a correction? The site has no contact form or email address, by design: it is maintained as a reference, not a help desk. Corrections come from our review cycle and from the official sources we monitor. For urgent help in Thailand, call the Tourist Police on 1155; for trip-specific questions about an affiliated service, use the contact details on that service's own site. ## Can AI assistants and other sites cite these answers? Yes. Please cite the specific page URL and its "Updated" date. A plain-text summary of every page is published at [/llms.txt](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/llms.txt), and the full text at [/llms-full.txt](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/llms-full.txt). - ### [Thailand entry rules and the TDAC](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/thailand#entry) 30-day visa-free stays since 15 September 2026, and the free arrival card. - ### [Resources directory](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/resources) eSIM stores, transfer sites by region, official Thai government sites and planning tools. --- Source: https://www.asiatravelforum.org/destinations Last updated: 2026-09-27 Destinations · Asia # Asia destinations: the practical basics for 10 countries Money, plugs, emergency numbers, clocks and which side of the road, for Thailand and nine more countries and territories, with the official arrival portal where one exists. Then which store covers which country, and what to do when the data will not connect. Updated 27 September 2026 · Checked against official sources **A travel eSIM is a SIM profile you download to your phone, usually by scanning a QR code, that gives you mobile data abroad without swapping the physical SIM card. It works if your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your home carrier; install it on Wi-Fi before you fly, then switch it on and allow data roaming for it when you land.** ## Key facts - **Phone:** must be eSIM-capable and unlocked. The stores below list iPhone XS/XR and later, Galaxy S20 and later, Pixel 3 and later, and other unlocked eSIM phones. - **Delivery:** a QR code by email after a one-time payment; no physical card and no roaming bill. - **Validity:** on the stores listed here, the plan's clock starts at the first connection in the destination country, not at purchase. - **Data only:** travel eSIMs give you data, not a local phone number; top-ups exist on plans marked "Top-up". - **Data roaming:** must be switched on for the eSIM line, or it will not connect. - **Your home number:** keep your normal SIM active for bank text messages, but turn off its data roaming. ## On this page 1. [What an eSIM is] 2. [Will it work on my phone?] 3. [When to install and activate] 4. [Do I need a local number?] 5. [eSIM store by country] 6. [One regional eSIM or several?] 7. [No data? Troubleshooting] 8. [FAQ] ## What is an eSIM, and how is it different from a SIM card? **Short answer:** an eSIM is a SIM built into the phone that you program by downloading a profile, instead of inserting a plastic card. A travel eSIM adds a second line for data while your home SIM stays in place. Most eSIM phones can hold several profiles and use two lines at once: typically your home number for calls and texts, and the travel eSIM for mobile data. Nothing has to be removed, so you cannot lose your home SIM card in a hotel room, and you do not need to find a SIM counter or shop after landing. Travel eSIM, local physical SIM or home roaming | Option | Good for | Watch out for | |---|---|---| | Travel eSIM (data only) | Data from the moment you land; several countries on one trip; keeping your home number active | Needs an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone; no local number | | Local physical SIM | A local phone number; long stays | Buying it after arrival; swapping out your home SIM | | Your carrier's roaming | No setup at all | Daily or per-MB charges set by your home carrier | ## Will a travel eSIM work on my phone? **Short answer:** it will if your phone model supports eSIM and your carrier has not locked the phone. Check both before you buy; an eSIM cannot be moved to a phone that rejects it. ### How do I check on an iPhone? 1. Open **Settings > General > About**. 2. Find **Carrier Lock**. "No SIM restrictions" means the phone is unlocked. 3. On the same screen, an **EID** number (or a Digital SIM entry) shows the phone has eSIM hardware. ### How do I check on Android? 1. Dial ***#06#**. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI numbers, the phone supports eSIM. 2. Look in the SIM settings (for example **Settings > Connections > SIM manager** on Samsung, or **Settings > Network & internet > SIMs** on Pixel) for an option to add an eSIM. 3. For the carrier lock, ask your carrier, or test a SIM card from another network: if it connects, the phone is unlocked. Menu names vary by model and software version. If a phone was bought on a contract, assume it may be locked until you have checked. ## When should I install and activate a travel eSIM? **Short answer:** install it at home on Wi-Fi a day or two before you fly, and activate it when you land by switching the eSIM line on, choosing it for mobile data and turning on data roaming for it. Installing needs an internet connection, so doing it at home avoids hunting for airport Wi-Fi. On the stores listed below, installing early does not use up your plan: validity starts at the first connection in the destination country. Keep the eSIM profile on the phone until the trip is over, because a QR code is often valid for one installation only; ask the seller before deleting and reinstalling. - Label the lines (for example "Home" and "Travel") so you can tell them apart in the settings. - Set the travel line for mobile data, and keep the home line for calls and text messages if you need them. - Turn data roaming on for the travel line and off for the home line. ## Do I need a local phone number, or is data enough? **Short answer:** for maps, messaging apps and ride-hailing, data is enough, and WhatsApp or LINE keep working with your usual account. You need a local number only for services that send one-time passwords to local numbers. One example in Thailand: registering a drone requires a Thai SIM card because the registration portal sends a one-time password to a Thai number. Some apps avoid the problem: the Smile Taxi Service booking app, for instance, logs you in with a code sent by email, so no Thai number is needed. If your bank sends security codes by text message, keep your home SIM active; your carrier may charge for texts received while roaming. ## Which eSIM should I buy for each country in Asia? **Short answer:** the ten country stores below sell data-only eSIMs for one destination (and regional plans that include it), paid once by PayPal, with the QR code sent by email. eSIM stores by country: the networks each store lists | Country | eSIM store | Networks listed | Coverage note from the store | |---|---|---|---| | Thailand | [Thai eSIM](https://www.thai-esim.com/) | AIS, TrueMove H, dtac | 5G in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya on supported plans; 4G/LTE nationwide | | Japan | [Japan eSIM](https://www.esim-japan.net/) | NTT docomo, KDDI (au), SoftBank | 5G in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and other cities; 4G/LTE nationwide | | South Korea | [Korea eSIM](https://www.korea-esim.com/) | SK Telecom, LG U+ | 5G in Seoul, Busan and other major cities; LTE nationwide | | Vietnam | [Vietnam eSIM](https://www.vietnam-esim.net/) | Viettel, MobiFone, Vinaphone | 5G in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang on supported plans; 4G/LTE nationwide | | Taiwan | [Taiwan eSIM](https://www.taiwan-esim.com/) | Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile | Regional and global plans that include Taiwan (no Taiwan-only plans listed) | | Hong Kong | [Hong Kong eSIM](https://www.hongkong-esim.com/) | csl, SmarTone | 5G across Hong Kong Island and Kowloon; 4G/LTE throughout the territory | | Singapore | [Singapore eSIM](https://www.singapore-esim.com/) | Singtel, StarHub, M1 | 5G across the island; regional plans also cover Malaysia and Indonesia | | Malaysia | [Malaysia eSIM](https://www.malaysia-esim.net/) | Maxis, CelcomDigi | 5G in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Johor Bahru and other cities; 4G/LTE nationwide | | Philippines | [Philippines eSIM](https://www.philippines-esim.com/) | Globe, Smart | 5G in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao on supported plans; 4G/LTE across the main islands | | Indonesia | [Indonesia eSIM](https://www.indonesia-esim.com/) | Telkomsel, Indosat, XL Axiata, Smartfren | 4G/LTE across Bali, Java and the main islands; 5G in selected cities on supported plans | Plans, prices and validity options change often and are shown live on each store. For other countries, the parent store [eSIM Hub](https://www.esim-hub.com/) sells travel eSIMs for many more destinations. Country basics (plugs, currency, emergency numbers) are on the [Asia destinations page](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/destinations). ## Should I buy one regional eSIM or a separate eSIM for each country? **Short answer:** for two or more countries on one trip, a regional plan means one installation and no switching at borders; for a single country, a country plan is the simpler choice. Compare data allowance and validity against your actual route. - **One country, one to four weeks:** a country plan sized to your stay; add data with a top-up if the plan offers one. - **Several countries in a row** (for example Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia): a regional plan that names every country on your route. - **Taiwan:** the Taiwan store sells only regional and global plans that include Taiwan, so check that the plan lists it. ## My eSIM is installed but has no data. What should I check? **Short answer:** in most cases data roaming is off for the eSIM line, or the phone is still using the home line for data. Check those two settings first, then restart the phone. 1. **Line on:** the travel eSIM is switched on and selected as the line for mobile data. 2. **Data roaming on** for the travel line; the stores listed here require it. 3. **Home line off for data:** turn off its data roaming, and on iPhone turn off "Allow Mobile Data Switching" so the phone does not fall back to it. 4. **APN:** if the installation instructions give an APN (access point name), enter it in the mobile network settings for the travel line. 5. **Network:** switch network selection to manual and pick one of the networks the store lists, then restart the phone. 6. **Still nothing:** use the store's contact page, which has installation guides and troubleshooting; have your order email ready. **Landing in Thailand with a Smile Taxi Service transfer?** The regional booking sites give a free 500 MB eSIM with an airport pickup, on request. What we say about them comes from their published store information and terms. ## Frequently asked questions **Q: Can I keep using WhatsApp with a data-only eSIM?** Yes. WhatsApp, LINE and similar apps are tied to the account you already have, so they keep working over the eSIM's data and your contacts still see your usual number. Only services that text a code to a local number need a local SIM. **Q: When does the eSIM's validity period start?** On the ten country stores listed here, at the first connection in the destination country, not when you buy or install. That is why you can install at home a few days before the flight. **Q: Will I still receive my bank's text messages abroad?** Only if your home SIM stays switched on. Keep it active for calls and texts but turn off its data roaming; ask your carrier whether it charges for texts received while roaming. **Q: What if my phone is locked to my carrier?** A locked phone will not accept another network's eSIM. Ask your carrier to unlock it before the trip; if that is not possible, your options are the carrier's own roaming plan or a separate unlocked device. **Q: Can I install the eSIM after I land?** Yes, if you can get online, for example on airport Wi-Fi, because the download needs a connection. Installing at home first is easier and does not start the plan early on the stores listed here. **Q: Does one eSIM work in several Asian countries?** Regional plans do: they cover a named set of countries, and the Singapore store's regional plans, for example, also cover Malaysia and Indonesia. Check that every country on your route appears in the plan before you buy. ## Sources 1. All 22 are booking sites of Smile Taxi Service, with the same terms: a fixed price per vehicle including tolls, nothing charged when you book, and payment to the driver at the end. They are affiliated with Asia Travel Forum. **Q: Which website is the official one for Thailand's arrival card?** Only tdac.immigration.go.th, run by the Immigration Bureau (the THIM app is the optional alternative). Filing there is free; sites that ask for a fee are unofficial look-alikes. **Q: Which eSIM store should I use for a trip through several countries?** Choose a regional plan that names every country on your route; the country stores and the parent store, eSIM Hub, sell them. If you visit only one country, that country's store is the simplest choice. **Q: How can I check that a Thai tour company is licensed?** Search its name or licence number on the Department of Tourism's licence check. Licences are issued by the Department of Tourism, not by the TAT, and they cover guides as well as companies. --- Source: https://www.asiatravelforum.org/thailand/airport-transfers Last updated: 2026-09-27 Thailand · Airports # Thailand airport transfers: every major airport, every option Ten airports, one question each: how do I get from the arrivals hall to where I am staying, how long does it take, and what are my options? Central Bangkok is about 30 km away, 45–60 minutes by road. **Public taxi:** open 24 hours; take a queue ticket from the kiosk, which assigns a lane (short trips within about 20 km have their own lanes). Taxis to or from BKK and DMK may add up to 20 THB per bag over 26 inches, up to 20 THB per piece beyond two, and up to 100 THB for items of 50 inches or more; the driver must tell you first. **Airport Rail Link:** 15–45 THB by distance (35 THB to Makkasan for the MRT, 45 THB to Phaya Thai for the BTS); contactless Visa and Mastercard work at the gates. A new operator takes over after 31 January 2027. **Ride-hailing:** the airport designates the Grab pickup at Level 1, Gate 4, 24 hours, and states that the Grab cars there are certified by the Department of Land Transport. Central Bangkok is 30–45 minutes by road. Both taxi ranks are open 24 hours, and the luggage rules above apply. Red Line fares run from 12 to 42 THB by distance, and a 40 THB daily cap applies when you pay with a contactless bank card (from 1 December 2025 to 30 November 2026; the published rules do not say whether foreign cards qualify). Trains run from about 05:00 to midnight. The old 20 THB flat fare ended on 30 September 2025. Don Mueang lies on the Ayutthaya side of Bangkok, so it is the closer airport for the old capital: about an hour by road with a [pre-booked DMK to Ayutthaya car](https://www.ayutthayataxis.com/route/airport-dmk-to-ayutthaya). It is about 3 hours to Korat, 2 to 2.5 hours to Pattaya and 5.5 to 6 hours to Khon Kaen. ## How do I get from U-Tapao Airport (UTP) to Pattaya or Koh Samet? **Short answer:** U-Tapao is south of Pattaya in Rayong province: Pattaya is 30 to 50 minutes by road, and Ban Phe pier, where the Koh Samet boats leave, is about an hour (55–69 km depending on the road). We have not verified the current shuttle services at U-Tapao, so check at arrivals if you want a public option. Pre-booked cars meet you outside the arrivals exit of this small terminal: [U-Tapao to Pattaya transfers](https://www.airporttopattayataxi.com/booking) run to any hotel in Pattaya, Jomtien, Naklua or Pratumnak, and there is a fixed [U-Tapao to Ban Phe pier](https://www.banphetaxis.com/route/airport-utp-to-banphe-pier) fare. Boat tickets are bought at the pier and are never part of a taxi fare. ## How do I get from Phuket Airport (HKT) to Patong or Ao Nang? **Short answer:** Phuket International Airport is at the north of the island. Patong is about 32 km (45–60 minutes), Phuket Town about 30 km (30 minutes), and Ao Nang in Krabi about 170 km (2.5 to 3 hours over the Sarasin Bridge). Airports of Thailand lists a shuttle bus, AOT Limousine, taxis and car rental at the airport. Other typical road times from HKT, as published by the Phuket transfer operator: Karon and Kata about 50 km (50–60 minutes), Khao Lak about 90 km (1 hour 30), Krabi Town about 195 km (3 hours). [Phuket Taxi Services](https://www.phukettaxiservices.com/) publishes a fixed airport–Patong fare and quotes other beaches by message; [Krabi Taxis](https://www.krabitaxis.com/) publishes fixed fares between Phuket Airport and Ao Nang. ## How far is Krabi Airport (KBV) from Ao Nang? **Short answer:** about 30 to 45 minutes by car from the Ao Nang beach road, according to the network's Krabi transfer operator. We have not verified the current public transport at KBV; ask at the arrivals hall. The network's Krabi operator prices Krabi Airport rides by message (its fixed fares are for Ao Nang to Phuket Airport and Patong). Railay has no road access: a long-tail boat takes about 15 minutes from the east end of Ao Nang beach or from Ao Nam Mao pier. ## How do I get from Chiang Mai Airport (CNX) to the old city, Pai or Chiang Rai? **Short answer:** Chiang Mai International Airport is in the city, and Airports of Thailand lists taxis, a public bus, a shuttle bus, a public car service and car rental there. Pai is about 130 km away (3 to 4 hours on a winding mountain road) and Chiang Rai about 200 km north. [Chiang Mai Taxi](https://www.chiangmaitaxis.com/booking) charges the same for a CNX pickup as for a city pickup on its three fixed roads (Pai, Chiang Rai, and the long road to Suvarnabhumi) and recommends an SUV for Pai; rides between CNX and city hotels are quoted by message. Sukhothai is about 320 km from Chiang Mai, 4 to 5 hours via Route 1 through Lampang. ## Should I fly to Sukhothai (THS) or Phitsanulok (PHS) for Sukhothai? **Short answer:** Sukhothai Airport (THS) is closer, about 27 km from New Sukhothai and about 40 km (about 50 minutes) from the Historical Park, but its flights come from Suvarnabhumi. Phitsanulok (PHS) is 60 to 70 km away (about 1 hour) and has flights from Don Mueang. Choose by the Bangkok airport you fly from. THS is a small airport in Sawankhalok district, north of both parts of Sukhothai; a shared airline minivan meets the flights and drops passengers at hotels in New and Old Sukhothai. A private car suits families, groups and heavy luggage. New Sukhothai and the Old City are about 12 km apart, and the network fare covers hotels in both: [THS to Sukhothai](https://www.sukhothaitaxis.com/route/sukhothai-airport-ths-to-sukhothai) or [Phitsanulok Airport to Sukhothai](https://www.sukhothaitaxis.com/route/phitsanulok-airport-phs-to-sukhothai). Si Satchanalai, about 55 km north, is quoted separately. ## How far is Khon Kaen Airport (KKC) from the city? **Short answer:** about 6 to 8 km, or 15 to 25 minutes to the city centre. We have not verified the walk-up options at this small terminal. The network's [Khon Kaen airport transfer](https://www.khonkaen-taxis.com/route/khon-kaen-airport-kkc-to-khon-kaen) is a pre-booked, meet-at-arrivals service rather than a cheaper taxi: it suits families, late arrivals, heavy luggage and visitors to Khon Kaen University or Srinagarind Hospital. Onward, Udon Thani is 115–120 km (under 2 hours) and Korat about 190 km (2.5 to 3 hours), both on Highway 2 with no tolls. ## How do I get from Udon Thani Airport (UTH) to Nong Khai and the Laos border? **Short answer:** Nong Khai and the First Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge are about 55–60 km from UTH, about an hour by road. A shared van runs from the airport to Nong Khai until about 17:00; later, or with family and luggage, a private car is easier. Thai taxis do not cross into Laos: the ride ends at Thai immigration at the bridge. UTH is about 5 km from Udon Thani city (about 10 minutes); for that short hop the walk-up airport taxi costs less than a pre-booked car, as the network's own [UTH to Udon Thani](https://www.udonthanitaxis.com/route/udon-thani-airport-uth-to-udon-thani) page says. For Laos, book [UTH to Nong Khai](https://www.udonthanitaxis.com/route/udon-thani-airport-uth-to-nong-khai) (Nong Khai town sits beside the bridge approach, so one fare covers both), clear Thai immigration, take the bridge shuttle bus across, then a Lao taxi or tuk-tuk into Vientiane, about 20 to 30 minutes. We have not checked Lao visa rules or shuttle fares. ## How do I get from Ubon Ratchathani Airport (UBP) to Khong Chiam? **Short answer:** UBP is in the city, 10–15 minutes from the centre. Khong Chiam, the Mekong town opposite Laos, is about 83–85 km from the airport, about 1 hour 25 minutes via Warin Chamrap and Phibun Mangsahan. Meter taxis and Grab serve UBP and usually cost less for the short ride into town, as the network's own Ubon site says; its fixed fares ([UBP to Khong Chiam](https://www.ubontaxis.com/route/ubon-ratchathani-airport-ubp-to-khong-chiam), [UBP to the city](https://www.ubontaxis.com/route/ubon-ratchathani-airport-ubp-to-ubon-ratchathani)) are for travelers who want a car waiting. Pha Taem National Park, with prehistoric cliff paintings above the Mekong, is roughly 15–20 km beyond Khong Chiam (quoted by message). Drones are banned in Khong Chiam district. ## How does a pre-booked airport pickup work? **Short answer:** you book the route and vehicle, a person confirms and checks your flight, the driver meets you (outside the arrivals exit at the small airports; at the meeting point confirmed with your booking at BKK and DMK), the first 60 minutes of waiting are free, and you pay the driver in baht at the end. 1. **Pick the vehicle.** Sedan for up to 3 passengers and 2 bags, SUV for 5 and 4, van for 7 and 5. The price is per vehicle, one way, with expressway tolls included. 2. **Give your flight number.** A person checks your flight before the driver sets off, so a delay moves the pickup. 3. **Add requests.** Child seat on request, 100 THB per seat on the regional booking sites (the fee is shown when you book); name sign 100 THB; English-speaking driver subject to availability. 4. **Meet the driver.** The exact spot comes with your booking confirmation. Waiting beyond the free 60 minutes is quoted by message. 5. **Pay at the end.** Nothing is charged when you book. Pay the driver in cash (THB), or ask by WhatsApp or LINE for a PayPal card link (+5%). Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before pickup. **Not in the fare:** boats and ferries, national-park and historical-park fees, and attraction tickets. Extra stops and detours are quoted by message before the trip. Don Mueang charges the same 50 THB surcharge. **Q: Is the Airport Rail Link faster than a taxi into Bangkok?** Usually. The train takes about 30 minutes to Phaya Thai for 45 THB, while a taxi to central Bangkok takes 45–60 minutes. It runs from 05:30 to midnight, so late arrivals and travelers with heavy luggage often prefer a car. **Q: Where is the Grab pickup at Suvarnabhumi?** On Level 1 at Gate 4, open 24 hours. Airports of Thailand designates it and says the Grab cars there are certified by the Department of Land Transport. **Q: Can a Thai taxi take me from Udon Thani to Vientiane?** No. Thai taxis do not cross the Friendship Bridge; transfers end at Thai immigration in Nong Khai. You walk through immigration, take the bridge shuttle bus to the Lao side and continue by Lao taxi or tuk-tuk, about 20 to 30 minutes to Vientiane. **Q: Which airport should I use for Sukhothai?** Sukhothai Airport (THS) if you fly from Suvarnabhumi: it is 27–40 km from the hotels. Phitsanulok (PHS) if you fly from Don Mueang: it is 60–70 km away, about an hour by road. **Q: What happens to a pre-booked pickup if my flight is late?** On the Smile network a person checks your flight before the driver sets off, so the pickup moves with the delay, and the first 60 minutes of waiting are free. Longer waits are quoted by message; nothing is charged in advance. ## Sources 1. Stops and detours on a pre-booked transfer are quoted by message before the trip. Road routing without traffic needs at least 8.5 hours, and transfer operators quote 8 to 9 hours from Suvarnabhumi, so most travelers fly or take the overnight train. **Q: How long is the drive from Bangkok to Sukhothai?** About 440 km and 5.5 to 6 hours from central Bangkok, or about 6 hours from Suvarnabhumi. The alternative is a flight to Sukhothai (THS) from Suvarnabhumi or to Phitsanulok (PHS) from Don Mueang, then about an hour by road. **Q: Can I drive from Ayutthaya to Kanchanaburi without going back through Bangkok?** Yes. The road runs west via Suphan Buri, about 144 km and about 2 hours, which is shorter than returning to Bangkok and driving out again. **Q: Are tolls included in a private transfer price?** On the Smile Taxi Service network, yes: fares are per vehicle, one way, with expressway tolls included. Ferries, national-park fees and attraction tickets are never included. **Q: How long does it take to get from Bangkok to Pattaya?** About 2 to 2.5 hours from central Bangkok (about 145 km) and 1.5 to 2 hours from Suvarnabhumi (about 115 km), which lies on the Pattaya side of the city. ## Sources 1. [FAQ] ## How long can I stay in Thailand without a visa, and do I need a TDAC? **Short answer:** 30 days visa-free for tourism (60 countries and territories, since 15 September 2026), and yes: every non-Thai traveler, children included, files the free TDAC within the 3 days before arrival. The list includes the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, all EU states, Switzerland, Norway, Japan, New Zealand, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and the UAE; anyone admitted before 15 September may stay until the date stamped in their passport. Visa on Arrival (15 days, 2,000 THB) now covers only Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia, and bilateral agreements continue (90 days for South Korea, for example). - **Passport** valid for at least 6 months on entry, and proof of onward travel within your permitted stay. - **Funds:** official pages disagree for visa-exempt visitors; the safe figure is 20,000 THB per person or 40,000 THB per family, checked at the officer's discretion. - **Extension:** once, by up to 30 days, at an immigration office (form TM.7, at the officer's discretion; the long-standing fee is 1,900 THB). - **Land borders:** visa-exempt entries overland are capped at two per calendar year (not applied to Malaysian, Bruneian, Indonesian or Singaporean passports). ### Who has to file the TDAC, and when? Everyone who is not Thai, arriving by air, land or sea, has needed the Thailand Digital Arrival Card since 1 May 2025. File it within the 3 days before arrival (arrival day included), up to 10 people per submission, with a new card for every entry. Transit passengers who stay airside and crew are exempt; the THIM app (launched 25 September 2026) is an optional way to file. **Fake TDAC sites** charge roughly US$10 to 90 for the free form and collect passport data; in March 2026 the Immigration Bureau said at least 10% of foreign arrivals had used one. Only [tdac.immigration.go.th](https://tdac.immigration.go.th/arrival-card/) and the THIM app are official. **Is there an ETA or entry fee?** No. The Electronic Travel Authorisation announced in 2024 never launched, and the proposed 450 THB tourism fee is still a draft (early 2027 is the stated target); nothing is collected today. ## Which airport will I land at, and how do I get into town? **Short answer:** most long-haul flights land at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK), about 30 km from central Bangkok, and many low-cost flights at Don Mueang Airport (DMK). From both you can take a meter taxi (meter + 50 THB surcharge + tolls), a train, a ride-hailing car or a pre-booked car. Look at the plate. **Yellow** means registered for hire; **green with white characters** is a licensed "service car" (airport and hotel transfers, tour cars); **white** is private and not licensed to sell rides, except app ride-hailing cars, which keep white plates but carry Department of Land Transport stickers. A paid van (more than 7 seats) should have a yellow plate numbered in the 30s. ## Which part of Thailand should I visit? Short answer: the centre for temples and food, the north for mountains and old capitals, Isan for Khmer ruins and the Mekong, the east and south for beaches, the west for the River Kwai. Your own bank's fees come on top. Thai ATM fees on foreign cards (per withdrawal, September 2026) | Card network | Fee | Source | |---|---|---| | Visa, UnionPay, JCB | 250 THB | SCB and Krungsri fee schedules | | Mastercard | 350 THB | SCB and Krungsri (Krungsri charged 250 THB until March 2026) | The 220 THB figure in older guides is out of date. If an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion), that conversion costs extra; choose baht. **VAT refund:** spend at least 2,000 THB per shop per day at stores showing the "VAT Refund for Tourists" sign, get form P.P.10 with the tax invoices on the day, and fly out from an international airport with the goods within 60 days. Purchases of 20,000 THB or more must be shown to Customs before check-in. VAT stays at 7% until 30 September 2027. **Cash limits:** declare more than 450,000 THB in Thai banknotes or more than USD 15,000 in foreign banknotes to Customs; taking out more than 50,000 THB in baht needs Bank of Thailand permission (2,000,000 THB to neighbouring countries). **Paying for a pre-booked transfer:** on the Smile Taxi Service network nothing is charged when you book; you pay the driver in cash (THB) at the end, or ask by WhatsApp or LINE for a PayPal card link (+5%). ## Should I get an eSIM or a Thai SIM card? **Short answer:** if your phone is unlocked and supports eSIM, install a data-only eSIM before you fly and keep your home SIM for bank text messages; buy a physical Thai SIM only if you need a Thai number. A Thai number matters only for services that send one-time passwords to local numbers (drone registration in Thailand is one). - [Thai eSIM](https://www.thai-esim.com/) sells data-only eSIMs for Thailand on the AIS, TrueMove H and dtac networks: the QR code arrives by email, and validity starts when the eSIM first connects in Thailand. - Switch data roaming on for the eSIM line and off for your home line. - The regional transfer sites in the Smile network give a free 500 MB eSIM with an airport pickup, on request. Phone compatibility, carrier locks and troubleshooting are covered step by step in the [eSIM guide for Asia](https://www.asiatravelforum.org/guides/esim-for-asia). ## When is the rainy season in Thailand, and when should I go? **Short answer:** the Thai Meteorological Department's seasons are hot (mid-February to mid-May), rainy (mid-May to mid-October) and cool (mid-October to mid-February). The cool season suits most of the country, but the Gulf coast stays wet until about December. Thailand's seasons and where they differ | Season | Months | What to expect | |---|---|---| | Hot | Mid-February to mid-May | The hottest months; Songkran (Thai New Year) falls on 13–15 April | | Rainy | Mid-May to mid-October | Showers and storms; the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is wettest from May to October. The 2026 season officially began on 15 May. | | Cool | Mid-October to mid-February | Drier and cooler in the north and centre; the Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Nakhon Si Thammarat) gets its heaviest rain from about October to December | Festivals to plan around: Songkran on 13–15 April and Loy Krathong on Tuesday 24 November 2026. Dengue peaks in the rainy season, so daytime mosquito protection matters most from May to October. ## Which Thai laws and customs catch visitors out? **Short answer:** vapes are illegal (bringing, buying or carrying one), recreational cannabis is no longer legal, alcohol is sold only from 11:00 to 24:00 and not on major Buddhist holy days, and temples expect covered shoulders and knees. Rules that affect tourists (as of September 2026) | Rule | What it means for you | Penalty (where verified) | |---|---|---| | E-cigarettes and vapes | Banned since 2014, e-liquids included; no personal allowance, devices confiscated | Bringing one in: up to 10 years and/or a fine. Buying or holding one: up to 5 years and/or a fine | | Cannabis | Prescription-only since 26 June 2025; since 30 April 2026 flower may be sold only in clinical settings. Taking it out of Thailand is smuggling | Smoking in public: up to 3 months and/or 25,000 THB | | Alcohol | Sold 11:00–24:00, not on five Buddhist holy days (next: Ok Phansa, 26 October 2026) except in hotels, airports and licensed venues; legal age 20 | Drinking in a venue during banned hours: fine of up to 10,000 THB | | Drones | Register with CAAT and NBTC; below 90 m, daylight only, not within 9 km of an airport; 28 Cambodian-border districts closed | Flying unregistered: up to 1 year and/or 40,000 THB | **Temples:** cover shoulders and knees, take shoes off before entering buildings, never point your feet at a Buddha image, and women should not touch monks. The Grand Palace also refuses shorts, mini skirts, sleeveless, see-through or crop tops and torn or tight trousers; it opens 08:30–16:30 and foreigners pay 500 THB. Queen Sirikit's royal cremation is on 15–19 December 2026 next to the palace, and closures for those dates had not been announced when we checked. ## What number do I call in an emergency in Thailand? **Short answer:** call the Tourist Police on 1155 (24 hours), an ambulance on 1669, the police on 191 and fire and rescue on 199. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) information line is 1672, from 08:00 to 20:00. 1155Tourist Police, 24 hours 1669Ambulance, medical emergency 191Police emergency 199Fire and rescue 1672TAT information, 08:00–20:00 The US CDC advises drinking bottled or filtered water rather than tap water, and a yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a country listed as infected. You can apply once at an immigration office to extend it by up to 30 days (form TM.7, at the officer's discretion; the long-standing fee is 1,900 THB), about 60 days in total. **Q: Does the Thailand Digital Arrival Card cost anything?** No. The TDAC is free on tdac.immigration.go.th and in the Immigration Bureau's THIM app; sites that charge are look-alikes. File it within the 3 days before you arrive, one card per entry. **Q: Is Grab legal in Thailand?** Yes, when booked through a Department of Land Transport-certified app, in a registered car, with a driver holding a public licence. Grab was on the last full list of certified apps (February 2024), and Suvarnabhumi designates its Grab pickup at Level 1, Gate 4. **Q: Can I buy alcohol in the afternoon in Thailand now?** Yes. The 14:00–17:00 ban ended (on trial from December 2025, permanently from 28 May 2026), so licensed shops sell from 11:00 to 24:00. Sales are still banned on major Buddhist holy days, the next being 26 October 2026. **Q: Is cannabis legal for tourists in Thailand?** Not for recreation. Since 26 June 2025 cannabis flower is sold only against a prescription from a Thailand-licensed practitioner, and since 30 April 2026 only in clinical settings. Smoking in public can bring up to 3 months in jail and/or a 25,000 THB fine. **Q: When is the most comfortable time of year to visit Thailand?** For most of the country, the cool season from mid-October to mid-February is the most comfortable. Exceptions: the Gulf islands such as Koh Samui are wettest from about October to December, while the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) is wettest from May to October. ## Sources 1.
